Virtues of mothers in Islam

Sayyiduna Mu’awiyah ibn Jahimah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reported that Jahimah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) came to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) and said, “O Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam), I desire to go on the military expedition and I have come to consult you.” Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) asked, “Do you have a mother?” He said, “Yes.” Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said, “Stick to her for indeed Jannah lies by her feet.”

(Sunan Nasai; Al Mujtaba, Hadith: 3104, Musnad Ahmad, vol. 4 pg. 429, Hadith: 15538)

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that a man once came to Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) and said, “O Rasulullah! Who is the most entitled to my good company?” Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) replied, “Your mother.” He asked, “Then whom?” Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) replied, “Your mother.” He asked, “Then whom?” Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) replied, “Your mother”. He asked, “Then whom?” Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) replied, “Your father.”

(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 5971 and Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 2548)
