This is a dangerous but sometimes common misconception that is deliberately shared by the uneducated Kafir. Just because that the "Crescent and star" symbol is a highly popular symbol of Islam, doesn't mean that we believe in a so called "moon god." The only significance the moon plays in Islam is the Islamic calendar, which is Lunar based. However, as for the moon symbolism, this can be attributed to the the times of the Ottoman Caliphate/Empire, which had the crescent and star symbol for its flag and highly popularised the symbol, which can even be seen in modern day Turkey today. Due to the impact of the Ottomans and since it was the most recent Caliphate, the symbol is still heavily popular and used globally to represent Islam.
Traditionally, the symbols of Islam would be plain black flags or Arabic callipgrahy of the Shahada or other such directly linked religiosu symbols. In other words, you have to be an idiot to make an assumption that the crescent symbol of Islam means we worship moon gods.
